SCRIPT IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE NEW VIC AND WARWICK ARTS CENTRE OFFER EXCITING NEW TRAINING OPPORTUNITY FOR SCREENWRITERS

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2005

Introduction to screenwriting will be held over four days at the New Vic in September and Warwick Arts Centre in October.

This course follows the format pioneered by screenwriting expert, Phil Parker (commissioned from his company PHScreenplay by the UK Film Council) to offer the definitive and well resourced training on the art of writing the short screenplay.

The sessions will cover the following subjects:

Developing Ideas - sources of inspiration

The Premise - assessing the viability of an idea as a screenplay

Outlines - first development stages

Stories, Plots and Narrative - exploring dramatic form

Characters and Characterisation - who's who

EDWARD BOND BOOK LAUNCH AT UCE

WEDNESDAY 13 APRIL

"Edward Bond and the Dramatic Child"

Edward Bond is widely regarded as one of the world's leading playwrights. He has written more than forty plays which have been performed in more than fifty-five countries.

This new book is edited by David Davis, Professor of Drama in Education in UCE and focuses on Bond's plays for young people. It is the first book in English to explore and explain his new form of theatre.

UCE are hosting it's launch, to include discussion, questions and book signing with Edward Bond and other speakers.

SCREEN WEST MIDLANDS ANNOUNCES NEW DEADLINE FOR SCRIPT DEVELOPMENT FUND

Screen West Midlands announces the next deadline for its popular Lottery Script Grants scheme : 5pm Friday 22nd April.

The scheme supports individual writers and production teams looking to develop first or second draft screenplays for feature films. Writers or producers can apply for a maximum £5,000 grant to support writing costs, and an additional £2,000 may be available towards script editor costs for successful applicants.

Artscape is the new national online directory for arts in education.

It is a useful resource for schools and other employers, to enable them to make an informed decision in their choice of artist for a project. It is an online directory which also serves as a showcasing opportunity for artists and arts organizations.

LAST CALL FOR LAST LAUGH

BBC Three is still searching the country for its nationwide sitcom writing competition The Last Laugh.

Eight top Uk sitcom writers have been commissioned to write the first twenty minutes of new sitcoms, and hopeful entrants are asked to complete them.

Participating writers include:

Jonathan Harvey (Gimme Gimme Gimme)

Paul Mayhew-Archer (My Hero, Vicar Of Dibley)

Marks & Gran (Birds Of A Feather)

Launched with the giveaway of thousands of free books containing the scripts, the competition is still open. These books are available from participating bookshops, libraries, and more random outlets such as kebab shops and taxi ranks all over the UK.

CHANNEL FOUR IDEASFACTORY CLASS OF 2005/6

Channel 4's IdeasFactory is currently undertaking a search for the Creative Class of 2005/6 - a collection of the hottest creative talent to watch..to hire...to collaborate with...to invest in.

PLAYWRIGHTS SLAMS 2005

Theatre and Beyond and Chichester Festival Theatre are looking for writers who are willing to play, experiment and look at their work in a new way for the 2005 Playwrights Slams.

The Playwrights Slam is fast, furious, informal and fun - short extracts are read by actors from the festival ensemble and at the end of the night the audience vote for their favourite piece.

Extracts must be short (ten minutes),imaginative, innovative and unusual. Writers are encouraged to be bold, experimental and playful. There are no limitations on genre, style, subject or setting but limited rehearsal time must be taken into account.

KING'S CROSS NEW WRITING AWARD 2005

The Courtyard Theatre is inviting stage plays from across the UK and Ireland for it's third King's Cross New Writing Award.

The Courtyard is committed to the development of new writing by honouring outstanding work by emerging playwrights and offering production opportunities to new talent.

The winning entrant will be rewarded with the development of their play with the Courtyard's own dramaturg and a four week run at the Courtyard Theatre with professional actors, directors and designers.

Each writer may submit up to two full length plays. Please note a small entry fee applies.

THE 24 HOUR PLAYS: STARBUCKS NEW VOICES

The Starbucks New Voices competition invites talented 18-25 year olds who aspire to careers in theatre to write, direct, rehearse and perform six new short plays on the Old Vic stage within the space of 24 hours.

Successful applicants will be invited to take part in a workshop series in summer 2005, and will also receive support and advice from industry professionals.

WORLD'S LONGEST RUNNING LIVE COMEDY SHOW OPENS ITS DOORS

NewsRevue now has an open-door policy for non-commissioned writers. They want song parodies and sketches on all topical subjects from now until July 2005.

Submit your material to NewsRevue for potential inclusion in the London show. The best of this material will later be selected for the Edinburgh Fringe, where NewsRevue is one of the top ten shows.

Several successful writers have contributed to NewsRevue, including Rory Bremner, Alistair McGowan and Bill Bailey.
