EVENTS....

 

EMERGING TALENT

 

The University of Birmingham presents this year's MPhil Playwriting students plays in a series of 30 minute extracts.

Thursday 9th June 11.00am - 5.00pm

Allardyce Nicoll Studio

University of Birmingham

Throughout the one year post-graduate programme (taught by playwrights Sarah Woods and Chris O'Connell) each student has developed a full length play.

An extract has been chosen from each and will be given a rehearsed reading. Each student has worked with a professional director and actors to present their work and the showcase will be attended by prominent members of the literary profession as well as the general public.

All are welcome to come and witness the new, exciting, writing talent in Birmingham.

SECOND CHANCE TO SEE SCRIPT/LIGHT HOUSE FILMS

The first screening sold out and the second is booking up already! The digital shorts made as a result of Script's Leap Off The Page programme are being shown again.

PAGE TO STAGE UNDER 25 SHOWCASE

 

New Theatre Works are presenting an evening of new writing by under 25's at the Courtyard Theatre in Hereford.

As the culmination of their Page to Stage competition, there will be rehearsed extracts from five new plays and a final winner announced.

GATHERING MOMENTUM

The Momentum Young Writers' Festival celebrates the best new, young writing from the East Midlands, featuring plays, manifestos, workshops, debates and more from 21 new playwrights aged 16-25.

All events will take place at the Lakeside Arts Centre, Nottingham.

CAN YOU GUIDE AND INSPIRE?

Midland Arts Centre is seeking an experienced playwright to teach a course in playwriting starting in January 2006.

The sessions will take place weekly for two terms. MAC are eager to find someone who can introduce students to what's involved in contemporary writing for the stage, offering practical exercises, guidance, feedback and inspiration.

NEW MA IN WRITING FOR STAGE & BROADCAST MEDIA

Central School Of Speech and Drama are introducing a new practise-based M.A. course for those interested in writing for stage, radio and screen.

Industry professionals will contribute to the teaching and students will undertake writing projects across a range of media, with opportunities for production for some of these. The course can be taken full or part time.

RETURN OF THE FUNDERS

Screen West Midlands has returned with the launch of new funding opportunities.

Digital Shorts 2005 is a short film scheme seeking the freshest filmmaking talent in the West Midlands and offering them the chance to make a short film.

The lucky eight finalists will receive funding of up to £9,000 to produce a short.

Screen West Midlands are also completing a Funding Roadshow during which anyone can go along and chat about forthcoming opportunities.

STAGE

ALFRED FAGON AWARD

Celebrating Caribbean playwrights in Britain, this award is inspired by the late Jamaican writer and actor Alfred Fagon and is open to anyone of Caribbean descent, resident in England.

Deadline : 30 August 2005

Writers can sumbit only one entry and playscripts only will be accepted.

ORANGE PLAYWRITING PRIZE

Orange, The Playwrights' Studio and The Herald have teamed up to launch a new playwriting competition to find emerging young playwrights across Scotland.

Deadline: 29 July 2005

 

There are two age categories, 14-18 and 18+,  and the winners of each will have plays produced at Oran Mor in Glasgow during the 2005 season of lunchtime plays.

Playwrights must be Scottish or live in Scotland, and plays must be between 30 and 40 minutes in length and require no more than three actors.

CHANNEL 4'S THE PLAY'S THE THING

Channel Four are searching for a new British playwright who will see their work produced in a West End theatre in mid 2006.

Initial deadline: 1 July 2005

Previously un-produced writers are being invited to submit their work now for a four-part television series, The Play's The Thing, which aims to put a brand new piece of work on to The West End stage and open up the world of commercial theatre for viewers.

During the first stage of the search new writers are invited to submit a synopsis, dialogue examples and descriptions of all characters.

THEATRE WEST STILL SEARCHING

Theatre West is searching for a script with strong female characters to right the balance of under-representation in recent years.

Deadline: 30 June 2005

Scripts should preferably be about 60 minutes long, have a cast of three or less and be simply set as the theatre is a small, first floor space.

THE CHILDREN'S AWARD

The Arts Council are offering the fifth annual award for children's theatre writing.

Deadline: 29 July 2005.

Submitted plays should be suitable for children up to the age of twelve and be at least 45 minutes in length. They must have been professionally produced between 1 July 2004 and 30 June 2005. The playwright must be resident in England.

39th JOHN WHITING AWARD

Intended to help further the careers and enhance the reputations of British playwrights and to draw to public attention the importance of writers in contemporary theatre.

Deadline: 9 January 2006

This award is open to writers who have had an Arts Council offer or award or a commission/premiere production from a theatre or company in receipt of subsidy from the Arts Council.

INDEPENDENT FILM COMPANY SEEKING SCRIPTS

Harrogate Independent Films are looking for short scripts to enter in the Screen Yorkshire Shorts competition.

HAT TRICK GO NORTH

Television production company Hat Trick  have recently set up a northern branch in Manchester and want to forge links with new and experienced writers in the North.

They are looking for full scripts for television (sitcom and one off 50 minute dramas) and will provide feedback within 12 weeks.

SCREENWRITER SOUGHT FOR CORNISH TALE

A production company are looking for a suitable writer for a feature film based on a famous Cornish story and best selling illustrated book.

It will be a family film using live action, animatronics and animation and experience in these genres would be preferable.
